Premieres Tomorrow Night!

January 27, 2014  -

The Break Side Poster

In anticipation of tomorrow night’s premiere, we wanted to share with you two articles that have recently been written about our web-series.

The first was published online by the Apple Valley Patch, where I’m from: Apple Valley Man’s Documentary Features Cool People, Ultimate Frisbee. Long Title, I know.

The second was published by Volume One, who wrote an article about us at the beginning of our trip. This issue also features an article about Schasse’s insane parallel parking skills. We’ll have copies of this article at the premiere tomorrow night as well: Ready For A Big Break.

Remember: Tomorrow (Jan 28) at 7 pm CST in the Woodland Theater in Davies Center. I’ll be there early to make sure the heat is on full blast. If you can’t grace us with your presence in person, we hope you’ll check out the episode online and follow us every Tuesday at 7!

Coming Tuesday, January 28th:

January 10, 2014  -

We traveled the western United States, met a lot of awesome people, had a lot of great experiences, and documented a lot of it on this website. But it’s only about 5% of what we still have to show you. We will be recreating the first two episodes we posted earlier, and creating ten (or so) more, and will be releasing one episode every week starting Tuesday, January 28th at 7pm (CST)

I quote myself in an outtake from our trailer when I say, “It’s going to be epic.”

The Many Faces of Christopher Schasse

December 14, 2013  -

Speaking of facial hair, we are now ready to release the video that many of us, myself including, have been eagerly awaiting.

For those of you that didn’t see our Kickstarter post, this introductory video, or any photo of Chris Schasse at all throughout the summer, let me bring you up to speed. After we reached our initial goal of raising $1000 through Kickstarter, Schasse up the stakes. He promised to shave his head and face at the start of our adventure and let both grow out for the rest of the summer. He took a picture of himself every day of the trip and compiled them into one stunning stop-motion video.

I personally think that the man looks best with medium length hair and a little bit of stubble. However, due to his oddly fast growing facial hair and extremely slow growing head hair, I didn’t get to see my favorite look on him this summer. Other people will tell you that he looks ruggedly handsome with all the facial hair he accumulated throughout the trip. So I’ll let you be the judge…Which Chris Schasse do you like best?

As a final note to our female viewers, I will add this: Schasse is single and willing to take requests with his hair, beard, and mustache styles. Your move, ladies.

We’ve Got Discs

December 1, 2013  -

Disc03

That’s right, like all good Ultimate players, we’ve ordered discs to help spread the word about The Break Side. Featuring the logo created by Aaron Schasse, our discs are USAU approved, 175 gram, 27 cm diameter flatballs that are guaranteed to make you look good.

If you’d like to order one (or five), we’re selling them for $10 a piece. However, if you order multiple, we might be willing to cut you a deal for being so awesome. That said, if you’re an independent person who wants to order without having to talk to one of us, feel free to order online here. We would be more than willing to ship to any of the 14 states we visited this summer, or any other state for that matter! We’ve got plenty to go around and we don’t want you to be the only ones with a Break Side disc.

A Weekend of Dinners

November 12, 2013  -

Schasse and I had three Break Side dinners on the docket the past weekend. Professional Ultimate player Neal Hanke, my aunt and uncle, and my dad and his fiancée.

On Friday night, we had planned on a late dinner at Neal’s, as Schasse wouldn’t be able to get to the cities until around 7 in the evening. I agreed to do all the prep work so we could eat as soon as we got to Neal’s place. However, at the last-minute, we were offered free Timberwolves tickets. So Neal dug out his old Tom Gugliotta jersey and we watched the Pups lay down a 19 point butt-whoopin of the Thunder.

Afterwards, we made it back to Neal’s and had dinner around 10:30. His roommate Al had promised to make a roast and we were in charge of chicken wild rice soup, salad, and beer. Al got preoccupied with other things and forgot the roast, so thankfully we made a lot of extra soup and no one went hungry.

On Saturday, Schasse and I prepared our largest Break Side dinner yet. My aunt and uncle Jane and Kevin were willing to host a larger crowd, combining their dinner with my dad, Jeff, and his fiancée, Meaghan. We invited a few other Break Side supporters; my grandma and grandpa, Kay and Jim, as well as family friends Brad and Diana.

We got to work early in the afternoon preparing roast chicken, mashed potatoes, asparagus, and a salad in a bowl large enough that Schasse almost got lost in it. Although we were cooking a detailed dinner for a large group, we managed to escape with only a minor hiccup. It turns out that a pumpkin pie has a longer prep time than an ice cream cake, so we had to skip the pie. Fortunately, Jane had some cookies and we brought ice cream, so the dessert was salvaged. AND, since the Wagner Thanksgiving is being hosted and Jane and Kevin’s, I’ve already delivered my contribution to that meal. Win-win.

Flashback Moment!

October 23, 2013  -

IMAG0724

I dug this picture out today in honor of Jackie Williams (far left) and her Seattle-based team, The DOH Abides, for their appearance at Mixed Club Nationals this past weekend. DOH won their region and took 11th at Nationals in Frisco, Texas.

This photo was taken in Seattle the weekend of the Emerald City Classic. Her friend, Johanna Leader, stumbled on our website after seeing herself in one of our videos. She then invited The Break Side to make an appearance at Jackie’s birthday bar crawl. We brought a few friends from MSP along and made a night of it.

At one point, we ran into the guy in the middle of the photo, who had arguably the best facial hair we saw on our trip. I insisted that he take a picture with the birthday girl and me. Clearly he was super enthused about doing so.

Anyway, congratulations to The DOH Abides, and all other teams who competed at Nationals, including The Break Side’s hometown favorite, Drag’n Thrust, for bringing home the National Championship!

We’re Making Headlines!

Headlines

Now that we’re back, we (I say we, but I mostly mean Schasse) have been working hard on creating and promoting our web-series. As you know, we will be releasing 10-12 episodes profiling our summer trip in great detail. You’re gonna enjoy watching.

The UW-Eau Claire College of Business has been a great supporter of ours ever since we started planning for our trip. I myself am an alumnus of the COB and Schasse (old as he is) is a current student. With this in mind, the COB decided to profile us in their October Newsletter. It’s a fun little article with a lengthy Q&A session with The Break Side fellas. It gives some interesting information about our trip that you may or may not already know.

You can check out the article here: http://www.uwec.edu/COB/info/news/2013_10_1b.htm

The Q&A was a really fun way for us to recap and rehash some of the best parts of our adventure. We’ve found out through out dinners and countless conversations with friends and family that we really enjoy talking about our trip and the plan for the future of The Break Side. So, as always, if you have questions/comments/idea/opinions for us, we’d love to hear them. Chris Schasse is quite the talker and as you probably know, I’m not a shy guy myself.

Thanks again for all the support and we look forward to sharing our episodes with all our fans come spring!

An Update on our Updates

July 31, 2013  -

So – in the video above – I mentioned that we have only come out with two videos since we started our trip. That’s not entirely true. What I meant to say is that we’ve only come out with two episodes. We’ve created a number of videos since we started our trip, like this one where James_throws_a_disc_really_far , or this one of Ashley Stahl beat_boxing_on_the_flute, or this short  clip that proves to our friends how bad all of us are at spikeball, or these kids_from_San_Mateo playing 7 on 7 Ultimate.

You may be wondering what actually differentiates a video from an episode. Videos can appear randomly in any update we post, and are often shorter and less produced. With episodes, we go all out and really try to feature one aspect of the trip. These can be anywhere from 7 – 20 minutes long. Sometimes we may also post a short update of our progress on this project, like we just did above.

I’m currently working on putting the footage together for the Hats, Hops and Hucks tournament we attended a couple of weeks ago, and you can look forward to that soon. Thanks you everyone for all your continued support! It’s been a crazy journey.

New Website Layout

July 24, 2013  -

Get it? Layout! It’s like a double meaning!

But seriously, we’ve changed a few things on the site that we want you to be aware of.

First, and probably most notable, is that we have separated the episodes from the updates. You’ll still see all the updates when you first come to the site, but we wanted to give you the ability to skip directly to our episodes. That way, you can quickly show your friends your favorite episode. Also, you can see all our disc donations in one location under the updates.

The second major change you’ll see is that we’ve expanded out ‘About‘ section. The reason for this is that people keep asking us what our motivation is for this trip and we wanted to make the answer more obvious on our site. We are experimenting with a number of different ideas and have several goals on mind, but this section gives viewers a little more detail about our purpose and our website.

Lastly, we’ve added a collaboration page that we hope you’ll explore. We want ensure that our viewers have every opportunity to help us on our journey. So please take a look at this page and if you would like to collaborate on our adventure, feel free to contact us.

Thank you for your continued support and we hope the new layout adds to your enjoyment of our site.
